Philodendron hopkinsianum

Root-climbing, herbaceous liana, flowering portion of shoot with short internodes, forming a leaf rosette, alternating with non-flowering portion having internodes 8.0 - 14.0 x 1.0 - 1.2 cm. Juvenile plant : leaf blades pendent and clearly appressed to the host tree bole, adaxial surface dull, dark green, subtly variegated by slightly paler areas between the primary lateral veins, which disappear in succeeding more mature leaves, primary venation impressed, abaxial surface paler and glossy. LEAVES: prophyll marcescent, forming a persistent, ferrugineous to straw-coloured fibrous mass surrounding the petiole base and inflorescences; petiole 40.0 - 43.5 x 0.5 - 1.0 cm, pale green with dark spots throughout its length, adaxial surface broadly sulcate with keeled margins, abaxial surface rounded; leaf blade subsagittate, always pendent, subcoriaceous, apex acuminate, adaxial surface glossy dark green in life, pale green when dried, abaxial surface dull and paler green, extrafloral nectaries present but not pigmented, primary and interprimary venation impressed adaxially, similarly coloured to blade on both surfaces; anterior division 27.0 - 35.0 x 19.0 - 25.5 cm, primary lateral veins 3 - 6 on each side; posterior divisions 5.0 - 8.0 x 10.0 - 13.0 cm, slightly asymmetric, acroscopic and basiscopic veins lacking. INFLORESCENCE: 2 - 3 in each floral sympodium; peduncle 3.0 - 11.0 x 0.5 - 1.0 cm, distinctly thickened apically, cream-coloured with paler striations; spathe 9.0 - 11.7 cm long, constricted; tube 4.0 - 4.5 cm long x 1.1 - 2.4 cm diam., externally cream-carmine, internally rose-cream; blade 5.0 - 7.2 diam. long x 1.1 - 1.4 cm diam., externally very pale green with reddish extrafloral nectaries, internally cream without resin canals, apex acuminate; spadix 10.1 cm long, subsessile, slightly decurrent basally; female zone 2.2 x 2.0 cm, somewhat flattened; intermediate sterile male zone 1.6 x 1.7 cm, subcylindric and slightly narrowed apically, pale yellow; fertile male zone 6.3 x 1.5 cm, somewhat flattened. Flowers: stamens 4 - 6 per flower, 1.6 x 0.8 mm; staminodes 2.0 x 2.5 mm; gynoecium 2.3 - 2.5 mm long; ovary 2.0 x 1.8 mm; locules 5 - 7 per ovary, filled with translucid mucilaginous contents; ovules 36 - 80 per locule, hemianatropous; placentation axile; style 0.5 mm long; stigma 2 mm broad, discoid, lobed. INFRUCTESCENCE: c. 8.0 cm long; berry 0.5 - 0.9 x 0.3 - 0.5 cm, intensely vermilion, elongated-cylindric to subglobose, pericarp with oily contents; seed 1.25 x 0.25 mm.
