Philodendron platypodum

Hemiepiphytic plant, stem erect, fixed, exuding resin when cut, with free lateral branches from the erect apex, and flagellate branches, on the fixed branches the internodes are 7-16 cm long, ca. 1.1 cm in diameter, on the free branches, internodes are 2-3 cm long, ca. 0.7 cm in diameter, greyish, brownish. LEAVES: Petiole 5-20 cm long, with a geniculum at the apex, glossy adaxially, dull abaxially. Sheath open and spreading in the apical portion, closed at the base, reaching up to 2.5 cm wide. Leaf blade 19-38.5 cm long, 7-18 cm wide, oblong, subcoriaceous, rounded-truncate at the base, apex lightly apiculate, upper side dark green, with venation slightly impressed, lower side light green, semiglossy, primary lateral veins 7-9 on both sides, prominent. INFLORESCENCE: Solitary, terminal. Peduncle 1.5-2.7 cm long, 0.5 mm in diameter, smaller than the spathe, with lighter striations. Spathe 10-12 cm long; tube 4.7-7 cm long, 1.8-2.4 cm in diameter, externally apple-green, internally paler green, with dark brown resinous lines; blade 5-6 cm long, 1-2 cm in diameter, externally apple-green, internally paler green, with resinous lines. Spadix ca. 14 cm long, subsessile, decurrent; female zone 5.3 cm long, 1.9 cm in diameter; intermediate sterile male zone 0.9 cm long, 1.8 cm in diameter, cylindric; fertile male zone 7.8 cm long, 1.8 cm in diameter, cylindric, apex obtuse. Gynoecium 3.5-3.75 cm long; ovary 2.25-2.75 cm long; locules 4-6 per ovary; ovules 14-15 per locule, ca. 0.25 mm long, hemianatropous; placentation axile, with ovules inserted very near the base; style 0.5-0.75 mm long; stigma ca. 1.5-2 mm wide, discoid. INFRUCTESCENCE: Immature ca. 11 cm long, 2.3 cm in diameter, cylindric, yellowish cream.
