Eugenia foetida

Eugenia foetida is a member of the family Myrtaceae, the myrtle family, and is colloquially referred to as "Spanish stopper" or "boxleaf stopper."

Eugenia foetida has a wide distribution in the American continent, occurring from southeastern Mexico to Central America, in addition to the Antilles (WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of a threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account due to unbalanced surveys in its entire range. Eugenia foetida occurs in protected areas for the Humid Tropical Forest biome. There are more than 10 known locations based on 103 records, where the species is distributed in Dry and Humid Tropical Forests, ranging from 20 to 500 m elev. The habitat has a low rate of environmental degradation, however, there is a high anthropic pressure on these forests, regarding the interest for extensive agriculture (CONABIO 2018). In Mexico, the species occurs within the “ Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul ” and “ Reserva de la Biosfera Los Petenes ”, both in Campeche, a state which concentrated more collections (INE-SEMARNAP 1999 a, CONANP 2006 c). The species is also protected within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, El Mirador National Park (Guatemala) and in the Rio Bravo Conservation Area (Belize), all of the aforementioned make up an important network of natural areas that extend to the Mexican territory. According to the analysis by the IUCN & BGCI (2020), E. foetida is considered as Least Concern (LC).
