Tulipa albanica Kit Tan & Shuka

Perennial Kraut. Zwiebel-Ovoid bis Ovoid-Globose, 1,5 – 2,5 cm Durchmesser, nicht stornig; Tuniken dunkelrötlich-braun, kartoffelartig, zu einem kurzen Hals verlängert; innere Oberfläche dicht mit geraden, 2,5 – 3,5 mm langen einzelligen Haaren bedeckt. Stängel aufrecht, 13-40 cm (einschließlich unterirdischer Teil), matrig, glaubhaft bis graugrün. Blätter 3 – 5, abwechselnd, matrig, glaubhaft bis graugrün, subakut bis mucronulös. Unterste Blätter (auf Bodenhöhe) linear-lanzolat bis breitlanzolat, Patent auf erektopatent, 10 – 25 × 1 – 3,5 cm, kanalikuliert, stark wellig. Oberes Kaulin hinterlässt viel kleineres, schwach kanalikuläres, leicht welliges, an der Basis ciliatierendes, sich verengendes und sich an der Spitze verjüngendes Kaulin. Blumen einsam (sehr selten 2), groß, aufrecht, campanulat, in zweifarbigen Formen, gelb bis goldgelb oder karminbraun, tief rotdishmaronisch. Perianthsegmente leicht ungleich; äußere Segmente elliptisch bis obovate, 4 – 7,3 × 2,3 – 3,6 cm, stumpf oder abgerundet-apikulär; innere Segmente elliptisch-oblanceolat bis obovate-spathulate, 3,5 – 7 × 2 – 4,2 cm, stumpf bis subakut. Perianth in rotblütiger Form mit auffälliger gelber Zone oder Fleck, die sich über ein Sechstel bis ein Drittel der Länge eines Segments erstreckt, außen sichtbar. Filamente goldgelb, 7-14 (– 17) × 1,5-2,5 mm, matrig, an der Grundfläche gedehnt. Antheren burgundrot bis schwärzlich-maronisch, länglich, 7 – 13 × 2 – 3,5 mm, c. gleich oder kürzer als Filamente; Pollen schwärzlich-maronisch. Untersessil aus Eierstöcken, hell bis gelblich-grün, 12-23 mm lang; Stigmata 3, rekurviert, rot-rosa, gelb oder hellgrün. Kapselblassbraun, ellipsoid, 3 – 3,5 × 1,5 – 2 cm, apikulär, kurzstipitat, mit deutlichen Queradern durchweg. Samen flach, dreieckig-deltoid, 5,5 – 6,5 × 4,5 – 6 mm, grünlich-braun, bei Reife dunkel-rötlich-braun. Blüte Ende April bis Mitte Mai; Kapseln Enthiscing von Anfang Juli.

Tulipa albanica is a flowering plant in the tulip genus, family Liliaceae that is native to Albania. It was discovered near the village of Surroj in Albania in 2010. The plant is a critically endangered species (CR) as it grows in an area smaller than 100 ha, surrounded by mining activities.

Tulipa albanica was formally described as a distinct species in 2010 by botanists Kit Tan and Lulëzim Shuka following field studies in northeastern Albania. The type locality is situated about 6 km from Kolshi village towards Surroj, Kukësi district, in Albania. Specimens designated as the holotype were collected on 7 May 2009 from north- and west-facing stony serpentine slopes, amidst open woodlands dominated by Quercus pubescens and scrub of Buxus sempervirens. Holotype specimens are deposited at the herbarium of the University of Tirana (TIR). The specific epithet albanica denotes the country Albania, highlighting the species' geographic discovery and distribution. The affinities of Tulipa albanica have been discussed with reference to the morphologically similar Tulipa scardica, native to the western Balkans (including North Macedonia and Kosovo), and Tulipa schrenkii, which occurs across the Ukraine, Caucasus, Central and Southwest Asia. Although it shares similarities in flower appearance with these species, distinct differences are evident. In particular, T. albanica has strongly undulated and distinctly channelled lower leaves, contrasting the flat or slightly undulate leaves typical of the related species. Moreover, it lacks the black basal blotch on the perianth segments, a feature commonly seen in T. scardica and T. schrenkii. Additional distinguishing traits from T. scardica include golden-yellow filaments rather than white or dark ones, smaller capsules, and larger seeds. Prior to the description of T. albanica, the only native tulip recognized in Albania was Tulipa australis. Observations confirmed the existence of two morphotypes of T. australis distinguished by slight differences in flower shape, size, and colour, associated respectively with limestone and serpentine substrates.
